What is an Earthquake?

Image
During the lesson, the children recapped their learning from year 3; layers of the Earth.  Then, they began to identify the different ways the tectonic plates move and their plate boundaries. Using this information the children were able to explain how the molten rock moves the plates in different directions. Whilst they move around they knock into each other and thus the pressure is built up. Once the pressure is released, the shock waves make the ground vibrate/shake and thus an earthquake is made.  Once the children had finished their work they looked at the live cam to see how many earthquakes had happened in the last 24 hours.

Extreme Earth

This week, the children have begun their new journey learning about the Earth.  Their first lesson was identifying how the lines of latitude and longitude can have an effect on climate.  Using a climate map, the children researched different climate graphs showing the average temperature as well as precipitation. From there, they used their knowledge to match pictures to a definition and a graph. Some great discussions were heard around the classroom to justify their thinking.

French: Notre ecole

Year 6 started their new topic - Our school. They revised numbers to 31 and learnt how to ask the time in French and then what to reply to the nearest hour. They then drew in the hands on clock faces. They also found out some facts about France.

Place Value

Place Value - our first unit of learning in year 6 , and the children have shown a terrific understanding. Place value is the foundation of our mathematical  knowledge, and as we conclude negative numbers this week, we are looking forward to moving onto  calculating using the four operations .

Year 6 Design Technology!

Year 6 kicked off their Design Technology project this today. In 5 weeks time, they’ll be skilled flat-bread makers! Today’s lesson started by researching the origin of bread. Did you know that bread was first made around 14,000 years ago?  We learnt how flour is made (ask us at home about the 3-step process) and explored the concept of food miles. We found out that the island is full of wheat fields and we have a flour mill here too.  Soon after, the best bit, tasting and describing the appearance, taste and texture of different types of bread. What a way to end a Monday - enjoying chewy, soft sourdough and delicate, flavourful garlic & herb flatbread.
